Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong has commissioned British award-winning filmmaker and visual artist Sam Taylor-Johnson, to create an amazing piece of art. The final work will be showcased at the Hong Kong Star Ferry site from 1 – 30 September, 2016. Best known for signature films “Nowhere Boy” and “Fifty Shades of Grey”, Sam Taylor-Johnson is a BAFTA and Palme d’Or nominated film director. She was made an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2011. Sam Taylor-Johnson’s artwork created for Mandarin Oriental at a large scale is named “Our Fans” being a collage which creatively showcases the brand’s unique cast of celebrity.
This follows the success of the collage created by artist Sir Peter Blake for the 50th anniversary of Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong in 2013. “This was a really interesting project for me, and an extension of the work I’ve been doing recently,” said Sam Taylor-Johnson. “The fans of Mandarin Oriental are a diverse group of extraordinarily talented individuals, including dancers, designers and actors. It was fun to look at the project like a ‘casting’ – putting Dame Helen Mirren with Morgan Freeman, and combining this with other elements from my own work.” Jill Kluge, Mandarin Oriental’s Group Director of Brand Communications says : “We are delighted to showcase this original piece by such a talented artist in our home town of Hong Kong. The collage is a celebration of the breadth and diverse nature of our celebrity fans displayed in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s inimitable style.”
Gathering state of the art pictures and videos created by the late and great celebrity photographer Patrick Lichfield, and lately the winning photographer, Mary McCartney, the campaign currently features 29 international personalities. In order to appreciate their participation in the campaign, Mandarin Oriental makes a donation to each celebrity’s individual choice of charity.
